Local leaders in Nyamagabe District have expressed satisfaction after learning that the Rwanda Forensic Institute (RFI) will assist them in ensuring justice for children whose fathers deny paternity.
The announcement was made on Thursday, October 9, 2025, during RFI\u2019s ongoing awareness campaign titled \u201cUnderstanding RFI 2025\u201d, held in Nyamagabe District.

RFI offers a range of forensic services, including DNA testing, toxicology (drug detection in the human body), analysis of prohibited drinks and medicines, and verification of handwriting and signatures to determine authenticity in dispute resolution, among others.
Jean D\u2019Amour Bavugamenshi, the Executive Secretary of Shyeru Cell in Gatare Sector, said one of the most appreciated services is DNA testing, which will help identify men who impregnate women but later deny responsibility. \u201cWe are going to sensitize residents to preserve evidence from crime scenes so that justice can be delivered easily,\u201d he said.
\u201cWe are especially grateful that RFI will help us identify men who deny children they fathered. This will prevent the emotional and social harm caused to those children and their mothers.\u201d
Em\u00e9rance Nyirakanani, Executive Secretary of Nyabivumu Cell in Gasaka Sector, noted that many local leaders were not fully aware of the services provided by RFI. \u201cFor instance, when a person committed suicide, locals used to rush to move the body,\u201d she said. \u201cNow we know that the scene must be preserved until experts arrive to collect forensic evidence to ensure justice.\u201d
Agnes Uwamariya, the Nyamagabe District Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs, said she was impressed by the services RFI provides, noting that they will make it easier for local authorities to protect children\u2019s rights. \u201cOne of the major challenges we faced was fathers denying their children,\u201d she explained. \u201cWith RFI\u2019s support, such cases will be resolved more effectively, ensuring every child knows both parents, which is their fundamental right.\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Innocent Nkurunziza, Head of Forensic Pathology at RFI, urged local leaders to encourage residents to safeguard evidence whenever crimes occur, emphasizing that doing so is key to achieving timely justice.
RFI also announced plans to open a branch in Huye District, which will serve residents of Huye, Gisagara, Nyamagabe, and Nyaruguru districts, allowing them quicker access to forensic<\/p>\n\n\n\n
