The African Union (AU) has appointed Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to head a mediation team tasked with seeking a lasting solution to the ongoing conflict between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision was announced following the AU\u2019s 1308th extraordinary session of the Peace and Security Council, held on October 28, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a communiqu\u00e9 released after the meeting, the Council directed the Chairperson of the AU Commission to work closely with President Museveni\u2019s mediation team to facilitate urgent talks between the two warring factions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The appointment comes amid renewed escalation of violence in Sudan, particularly in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, where the RSF has been accused of committing widespread atrocities \u00a0including mass killings, obstruction of humanitarian aid, and the displacement of civilians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to reports, more than 1,500 people have been killed in El Fasher over the past four days, while thousands of others have been forced to flee their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United Nations has condemned the deteriorating humanitarian situation, citing alarming reports of systematic sexual violence, including the rape of women and young girls, as well as the killing of children caught in the crossfire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under his new mandate, President Museveni will lead efforts to urge both sides to immediately halt hostilities and open humanitarian corridors to ensure safe access for relief operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mediation process will also seek to initiate inclusive political dialogue, bringing together all key stakeholders to help restore peace, stability, and national reconciliation in Sudan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Museveni\u2019s appointment underscores the AU\u2019s determination to strengthen African-led conflict resolution efforts, drawing on the experience and influence of senior regional leaders to end the Sudan crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conflict, which began in April 2023, has so far claimed more than 24,000 lives, displaced over 13 million people, and devastated vital infrastructure across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
