This milestone has been achieved through the Stunting Prevention and Reduction Project (SPRP), funded by the World Bank.

So far, 1,653 households have been connected to clean water through the upgraded infrastructure. The project is expected to expand further, reaching an additional 1,569 households benefiting over 7,000 more residents before its completion.

Residents recall the hardships they faced before the intervention, describing long and exhausting journeys in search of water, often relying on unsafe sources that exposed them to diseases.

Aline Mukamana, a resident of Muyongwe Sector, shared: “Getting water used to be extremely difficult. We had to walk long distances, and sometimes we fetched water from swamps. Our children frequently fell sick due to poor hygiene. Now, clean water is nearby, and our lives have changed significantly.”

Eric Habimana from Gashenyi Sector echoed similar sentiments: “We struggled a lot to find water, sometimes going days without enough for basic needs. Hygiene in our homes was poor. Today, water is easily accessible, our families are healthier, and life has improved greatly.”

The availability of clean water has brought visible improvements in daily life. Hygiene standards have increased, waterborne diseases have declined, and families are now able to use water for cooking, sanitation, and even small-scale farming, contributing to better nutrition.

The Mayor of Gakenke District, Vestine Mukandayisenga, emphasized the importance of the project, stating: “The rehabilitation and expansion of water systems have significantly reduced hygiene-related diseases and saved time for residents. Children no longer miss school to fetch water, and adults can focus on productive activities. This is a major step forward in our district’s development.”

She also urged residents to protect and properly maintain the water infrastructure to ensure its long-term benefits.

This project launched in May 2024 and implemented in collaboration with the Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC), the project focused on rehabilitating the Mugamba I water system in Gashenyi Sector and upgrading the Mataba-Gitovu pipeline in Muyongwe Sector.

Meanwhile, work is ongoing to upgrade the Bushyombori water system in Rusasa Sector, which is expected to be completed in 2026.
