It created a platform where young players could showcase their abilities, build friendships, learn teamwork, and strengthen the values that sport can instill in future generations.

As Rwanda continues to invest in grassroots sports development, youth football competitions such as this one are increasingly viewed as an important pathway for identifying talent, promoting social inclusion, and encouraging healthy lifestyles among children and adolescents.

The tournament attracted 29 teams divided into four age categories: eight teams in the U10 category, eight in U14, eight in U17, and five teams in the senior category for players aged 18 years and above.

For several days, the grounds of Don Bosco Kabgayi Oratory became a vibrant meeting point for young footballers, coaches, parents, and supporters from different communities across Muhanga District. The atmosphere reflected not only competition but also a shared commitment to youth development through sport. Throughout the tournament, players demonstrated technical ability, teamwork, discipline, and respect for the laws of the game. Coaches and match officials also played an important role in ensuring that every match was conducted in a spirit of fair play, mutual respect, and healthy competition

The finals for the U10, U14, and U17 categories were played on Saturday, 30 May 2026, while the senior category final took place on Sunday, 31 May 2026. The closing stages of the competition produced exciting matches and memorable moments for players and spectators alike. In the U10 category, IMENA FTC emerged champions after defeating THE WINNERS FTC 1-0 in a closely contested final that showcased determination and commitment from both teams.

The U14 final saw THE WINNERS FTC overcome FLIERS FTC in a dramatic penalty shootout. After an evenly balanced match, The Winners FTC secured the trophy with a 4-3 victory on penalties.

In the U17 category, DON BOSCO KABGAYI FTC claimed the championship title after defeating RAINBOW FTC 4-3 on penalties following a hard-fought draw in regular time. The victory sparked celebrations among players, coaches, and supporters who had witnessed one of the tournament’s most competitive encounters.

The senior category final was equally intense, with EDEMA FC defeating VISION FC 4-2 in a penalty shootout to lift the trophy after a closely contested match. While trophies were awarded to the winning teams, tournament organizers emphasized that the broader objective was to provide children and young people with opportunities to play, learn, grow, and develop their talents in a positive environment.

Addressing participants during the closing ceremony, Fr. Makoroka Olivier praised the dedication of coaches and the conduct displayed by the young players throughout the tournament.

“We sincerely thank all the coaches who continue to dedicate themselves to nurturing and training these children,” he said. “We also congratulate the children for demonstrating talent, discipline, and a love for football. However, talent alone is not enough. We encourage them to work hard in their studies as well so that they can build a bright future. We also urge them to continue praying, embrace positive values, and become responsible citizens.”

Fr. Makoroka noted that the tournament forms part of a broader effort by Don Bosco Kabgayi Oratory to support the holistic development of young people through sport, education, and character formation. He also announced that additional youth activities and competitions are planned during the upcoming school holidays to provide more opportunities for children to develop their talents.

Among those reflecting on the success of the tournament was Twizeyimana Emmanuel, a coach at Don Bosco Kabgayi, who described the competition as exceeding expectations despite the logistical challenges involved in organizing a packed schedule of matches.

“The tournament was more successful than we had anticipated,” he said. “The match schedule was demanding, and it required a great deal of effort from coaches and organizers. However, seeing the enthusiasm of the children and the level of talent they displayed made all the hard work worthwhile.”

According to Twizeyimana, regular competitions are essential for helping young players gain confidence, develop resilience, and become accustomed to competitive environments from an early age.

“Competitions like this help children learn how to compete while continuing to develop their skills. They prepare them for bigger opportunities in the future,” he explained.

Looking ahead, he revealed that organizers are already preparing a youth football festival and additional tournaments during the school holidays.

“We encourage children to focus first on completing their studies successfully. Once the school year ends, the holidays will provide another opportunity for them to continue developing their football abilities through structured competitions and training activities,” he added.

Twizeyimana also highlighted the growing contribution of Muhanga District to Rwandan football, noting that the area has produced several well-known players, including Kabage, Nzotanga, Clement, Nkubana Marc, Sugira, René, and Serieux.

“Many talented players have emerged from this district, and there are many more young talents coming through. What they need is continued support, opportunities to play, and environments that allow them to develop their potential,” he said.

He concluded by calling on parents, supporters, private-sector partners, and other stakeholders to invest in grassroots football initiatives, emphasizing that youth academies remain the foundation for developing future national players.

As preparations begin for future youth competitions and holiday football festivals, the success of this year’s Mary Help of Christians Tournament has reinforced Muhanga’s growing reputation as a centre for grassroots football development.

For the children who participated, the tournament was more than a competition. It was an opportunity to dream, learn, compete, and take another important step toward their future both on and off the pitch. For Don Bosco Kabgayi Oratory, it represented another milestone in its ongoing mission to nurture young people with talent, values, discipline, and vision.

<figure class="wp-block-image
