South Kivu: M23 Rebels Advance Toward Shabunda Town

The M23 rebel group, which is fighting against the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), is reportedly advancing toward the town of Shabunda in South Kivu Province. This comes amid ongoing clashes between M23 and a coalition of the Congolese army (FARDC) and local militias known as Wazalendo.

Shabunda Territory holds strategic and economic importance for the DRC government due to its rich deposits of valuable minerals, especially gold. The area has long been a hotspot of conflict, as both government forces and militias seek to control these resources.
Since Saturday last week, intense fighting has been reported in parts of Kabare and Walungu territories. M23 fighters are said to have captured several key villages, including Chulwe, Kishadu, Lubimbe 1, and Lubimbe 2 in Kabare, effectively opening a route leading toward Shabunda.
On October 6, the clashes spread into the Kibandamangobo Forest in Shabunda Territory, as well as nearby areas such as Lubimbe, Luntukulu, and Mulambula.

By October 7, reports indicated that M23 had taken control of more locations, including Luntukulu, and that the fall of Chulwe and other areas had facilitated their advance toward Shabunda and Mwenga towns. Many members of the pro-government coalition reportedly fled as the rebels moved closer.
The Congolese army and Wazalendo militias are under growing pressure, fearing that M23 could soon seize Shabunda town. On October 7, government forces reportedly fired warning shots into the air, causing panic among residents who believed the rebels had already entered the town.
