Nyamagabe Coffee Farmers Welcome New Seedlings as NAEB Urges Adoption of Modern Farming Practices

Coffee farmers in Nyamagabe District, particularly those in Cyanika Sector, say the new coffee seedlings they received through the PSAC project will help increase both the quantity and quality of their production. The National Agricultural Export Development Board (NAEB) is encouraging them to embrace modern farming methods to boost yields and improve quality.

Farmers in Cyanika Sector expressed excitement after receiving the new seedlings distributed under the PSAC project, implemented by NAEB. They believe these seedlings will significantly improve production, especially since many of their old coffee trees were aging and less productive.

The project aims to support smallholder farmers growing export-oriented crops especially coffee by providing inputs and technical support that enhance productivity and household incomes.

Farmers Confident About Increased Yields

Nsabimana Ethiene, one of the coffee farmers in the sector, said they had long awaited these seedlings because of their higher yield potential.“We are very happy to receive these seedlings. Our old coffee trees had aged, but these new ones give us confidence that we will harvest more and better-quality coffee. What we need now is continued training in modern farming practices.”

Uwizeyimana Christine also welcomed the support, saying the improved seedlings would contribute to better yields and more consistent quality. “Receiving new seedlings is a great opportunity because we are replacing old, unproductive trees. This will help our coffee grow better. Support like this is key to improving our livelihoods.”

For Mukandahiro Liberta, the new seedlings represent a path toward economic growth for farming households. “When you have good seedlings and apply modern farming knowledge, production increases. We believe this project will help us expand our output and improve our standard of living.”

Eric Kabayiza, Coordinator of the PSAC project at NAEB, said the new seedlings have the potential to produce significantly better results when well managed. “These improved seedlings are much more productive than the older varieties. When farmers follow the recommended agronomic practices, yields increase and quality improves. We encourage farmers to adopt modern farming techniques to maximize the benefits.”

Nyamagabe to Expand Coffee Planting Area

Thadée Habimana, Nyamagabe District Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Development, said the district has become a major coffee producer in Rwanda, making expansion of coffee farmland a key priority. “Nyamagabe has built a strong reputation in coffee production. To increase output, we must expand the area under coffee cultivation. Our farmers are capable, and we already have enough processing plants to support production.”

In Ngoma Cell of Cyanika Sector, 26,800 coffee seedlings have already been planted on more than 10 hectares.

Across Nyamagabe District, a total of 417,200 seedlings are expected to be planted this year on 166 hectares, as part of efforts to increase the district’s coffee production capacity and improve farmers’ incomes.
