Thursday, July 17th, 2025 at 10:00 AM CAT: A heartfelt memorial service was held today to honor the extraordinary life and enduring legacy of Dr. Paul E. Farmer, a visionary global health leader whose commitment transformed healthcare delivery in resource-limited settings worldwide.

The event, attended by colleagues, friends, and community members, featured powerful speeches and memories recalling Dr. Farmer’s unwavering dedication, deep compassion, and pioneering spirit.

In his address, Rwanda’s Minister of State for Health, Dr. Yvan Butera, paid tribute to Dr. Farmer’s instrumental role in rebuilding Rwanda’s health system. “Paul stood with us during our darkest hours, working tirelessly alongside Rwandan institutions to expand high-quality care beyond urban centers into underserved rural districts,” he said. Dr. Butera highlighted how Farmer’s innovative, equity-driven approach combined cutting-edge science with practical on-the-ground realities, fundamentally transforming healthcare delivery in Rwanda.

He reminisced about their shared history, recalling how Dr. Farmer, as a beloved professor, taught the inaugural class of the Masters of Global Health Delivery on the campus of UGHE, even before Butaro was built.

“Paul chose not to look away from our suffering. He believed that everyone deserves the same level of care, regardless of location or resources,” said Dr. Butera. “His friendship with Rwanda’s leadership was built on mutual trust, driven by his principled belief that excellence and equity go hand-in-hand.”

Throughout the service, speakers emphasized Dr. Farmer’s unique blend of intellectual clarity and moral imagination. His ability to articulate complex ideas simply and inspire action was legendary. Whether it was scaling oncology services in rural districts or creating institutions that fostered innovation and resilience, Dr. Farmer’s conviction that healing requires both science and solidarity resonated deeply across the global health community.

The memorial honored his achievements—author of influential works such as In the Company of the PoorReimagining Global Health, and Fevers, Feuds, and Diamonds—and celebrated the principles that guided his work: that compassion, laughter, and lightness are essential tools, and that the pursuit of health equity is a moral imperative.

Dr. Farmer’s legacy endures in the countless lives he touched and in the ongoing commitment to building health systems rooted in dignity, resilience, and solidarity. Today’s tribute was a testament to a man whose life was dedicated to healing the world, embodying the belief that health is a human right for all.
