UCI Honors President Kagame with Distinguished Medal in Cycling Sport

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has awarded President Paul Kagame a prestigious medal recognizing his outstanding contribution to the development of cycling, particularly for helping Rwanda make history on the global stage.

On Saturday evening, September 27, President Kagame joined UCI President David Lappartient and Prince Albert II of Monaco for a gala dinner at the Kigali Convention Center.

Speaking at the event, UCI President Lappartient praised Kigali for setting a historic precedent as the first African city to host the UCI Road World Championships, noting that Rwanda went above and beyond expectations.

“Kigali did not only meet our expectations but went further to achieve much more. The cycling family has truly felt the love of Rwanda this week,” he said.

Lappartient commended President Kagame’s efforts in ensuring Africa hosted its first-ever World Championships in the 103 years of the competition’s history. “Thank you, President Kagame. We will never forget the way your country welcomed us. It is an honor to have you as a strong supporter of cycling and of the World Championships. Your contribution means a lot to us,” he added.

He then presented President Kagame with the UCI’s distinguished service medal, traditionally awarded to individuals who have made remarkable contributions to the sport of cycling. “I would like to present you with a jersey similar to those worn by champions this week, along with this medal, as recognition of your role in making the 2025 UCI Road World Championships possible,” Lappartient said.

President Kagame expressed gratitude for the honor and thanked the UCI for choosing Rwanda as the historic host.“Thank you for this extraordinary gift. I may not have raced, but I feel like I have won. My deepest appreciation goes to those who worked tirelessly behind the scenes. Your efforts did not go unnoticed,” Kagame said.

He highlighted the electrifying atmosphere during the races, with Kigali’s streets filled with fans, cheers, and celebration, calling it a powerful display of unity through sport. “We are here because UCI placed its trust in Rwanda. We are proud to have played a role in this historic milestone for cycling. Please consider Rwanda your home  you will always be welcome,” he added.

President Kagame also emphasized that investing in sports provides young people with opportunities and the strength to pursue their dreams for the future.

The 2025 UCI Road World Championships will conclude on Sunday, September 28, with the men’s elite road race. The 267.5 km race is scheduled to start at 9:45 AM and finish at 4:45 PM in Kigali.
