Pop icon Britney Spears has opened up about her marriage to Sam Asghari, which ended in divorce, describing it as a way of distracting herself from deep personal struggles—particularly the pain of being separated from her two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, for three years.
In a lengthy Instagram post shared on Sunday, the 43-year-old singer revealed that the period was one of the most difficult times of her life.
“The saddest years of my life were the three years when my kids weren’t with me,” she wrote. “I was denied the right to call them or even text them. Honestly, the only way I coped was by distracting myself—crying often—and while I was with Sam and we got married, it felt like a form of escape to get through it.”
The star, best known for hits such as Gimme More and Toxic, added that she now feels she is finally beginning to heal.
“I feel like I’m healing because I have an appetite again, like a child. When I eat, it feels like the first time I’ve ever eaten in my life. I thank Jesus for keeping me strong, because now I’m learning to say ‘no,’ to fight for my life, and to show people who I truly am,” she said.
Spears married Sam Asghari in June 2022 in a star-studded wedding. However, by August 2023, Asghari filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. Their divorce was finalized in May 2024.
Asghari, now 31, had been in a relationship with Spears for seven years and once claimed he had been pressured into signing agreements preventing him from publicly sharing details about their relationship.
Despite the struggles, Spears expressed joy at reuniting with her younger son, Jayden, now 18, in 2024 after years of estrangement.
Britney was previously married to Kevin Federline from 2004 to 2007, with whom she shares her two sons, Sean, now 19, and Jayden, 18.
