Court Strikes Down Trump’s International Tariffs

The United States Court of Appeals has ruled to overturn the tariffs that President Donald Trump imposed on several countries, declaring them unlawful.

In February 2025, just days after returning to office, Trump sharply increased tariffs on goods from countries including China, Canada, and Mexico, framing the move as retaliation for what he described as unfair practices by these nations.

Trump argued that China exported far more goods to the U.S. than it imported, while heavily taxing American products. Regarding Canada, he controversially claimed the country was being punished for rejecting the idea of becoming the 51st U.S. state.

When the case was brought to court, Trump’s legal team defended the tariffs as extraordinary measures justified by the economic threats posed by powerful foreign economies to the United States.

However, on August 29, the Court of Appeals dismissed Trump’s reasoning, ruling that the tariffs must be lifted because they violated international trade laws.

On August 30, Trump reacted through his Truth Social platform, warning that if the decision were enforced, it would “cripple America” by weakening its financial strength.
“These tariffs are essential for our country. Without them, we will be financially weaker. America will no longer tolerate massive trade deficits, unfair tariffs, and barriers imposed by both friends and foes that undermine our industries, farmers, and workers,” he wrote.

Trump further argued that for decades, politicians had used tariffs to undermine U.S. administrations, and that his policy aimed to support American workers and encourage domestic manufacturing.

The court informed Trump’s administration that if it disagrees with the ruling, it has until October 14 to appeal to the Supreme Court. If no appeal is filed, the tariffs will be formally lifted on that date.
