Uganda’s Parliament to Review Bill Protecting Artists’ Rights

Uganda’s Parliament is set to review a proposed law aimed at protecting the rights of artists.

Renowned musician Edirisa Musuza, popularly known as Eddy Kenzo and serving as President of the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF), confirmed that a draft Copyright Law will soon be tabled before Parliament for consideration.

The bill seeks to address long-standing challenges faced by Ugandan artists, who often struggle to secure proper ownership and financial benefit from their creative works.

According to Howwe.Ug, Eddy Kenzo emphasized that the legislation could transform the livelihoods of musicians by granting them full rights over their original content.

“The bill has already been presented for its first reading in Parliament. The second reading will follow, after which further debates will take place. From what I’ve been told by Members of Parliament, I am confident it will be passed soon. Its approval is crucial, because if it fails, it would crush the hopes of artists,” he said.

The initiative was first introduced by musician-turned-legislator Hillary Kiyaga, known as Dr. Hilderman. The government has since taken over its advancement, with the Ministry of Justice and the Secretary General’s office leading the process.

Eddy Kenzo stressed that the proposed law will not only guarantee artists fair compensation for their work but also grant them comprehensive ownership rights, enabling sustainable income generation.

He added that the law’s implementation would benefit the entire creative industry, as artists would gain more resources to reinvest in their craft and foster innovation.

Kenzo further highlighted that Ugandan musicians need strong support, affirming that it is the government’s responsibility to protect them and ensure they fully enjoy the rights to their creations.
