Mogadishu, Somalia, June 16, 2025 –The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has officially opened the National Consultative Forum aimed at discussing the country’s political future—particularly the strengthening of national unity, completion of the constitution, electoral process reforms, the fight against terrorism, and the consolidation of state institutions.

In his speech at the forum, the President highlighted the government’s continued efforts to establish a direct electoral system, where the Somali people can fully elect their leaders. He emphasized that both political camps—opposition and ruling party—are united in rejecting the return to the indirect electoral system, which undermined transparency and democratic principles.

“This platform reflects the importance we place on listening to diverse opinions regarding governance. As the government, we are seeking dialogue and consultation—something that was missing from previous leadership. The door to consultation and dialogue is open, and everyone is invited to participate in building the state-building process we aspire to.”

President Hassan Sheikh further noted that international partners have supported Somalia as much as they could, but the responsibility to complete the state-building process ultimately lies with the Somali people and political leaders.

“The world has supported us where needed, but what remains is work we must do ourselves. As Somalis, we must seriously agree among ourselves on the future of our country.”

Former national leaders, federal and state-level officials, prominent Somali figures attending the forum, and religious scholars also spoke on their role in realizing a unified national vision.

They also expressed strong commitment to supporting the government’s efforts toward building an inclusive state—one that serves as a foundation for lasting peace, justice, and sustainable development.

The forum is particularly focused on strengthening national unity, finalizing the constitution, the electoral system, the fight against terrorism, and reinforcing statehood.

“We know the opposition is against it, but what is expected of them is that their grievances and concerns should be addressed in a constructive way.”

Former President of the disputed Hirshabelle administration, Ali Osoble Siyad, was among the officials who participated last night in the National Consultative Forum, which is discussing the political future of the country.

“Osoble called on the opposition groups to come to the forum where the future of the country is being discussed, because this country is not allowed to stand on its own feet and benefit from its own resources.

He added that that international community does not allow and is not happy for our oil production to be extracted, because they want Somalia to remain the world’s reserve.”

This forum is particularly focused on strengthening national unity, finalizing the constitution, the electoral system, the fight against terrorism, and reinforcing statehood.
