President Kagame Holds Talks with Egypt’s El-Sisi in Cairo

President Paul Kagame has arrived in Cairo, Egypt, for a working visit, where he was received by his counterpart, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. The two leaders first held a private meeting at the Al-Ittihadiya Presidential Palace before engaging in extended talks with their respective delegations.

According to a statement from Village Urugwiro, the Office of the President, discussions centered on strengthening bilateral ties and exploring new areas of cooperation.

Rwanda and Egypt share longstanding diplomatic relations, with each country maintaining an embassy in the other. On August 12, 2024, the two nations signed agreements across several sectors, including health, transport, and trade. The accords also included land exchanges to facilitate business operations: Rwanda allocated 10 hectares in Kirehe District, near the Tanzania border, to Egypt, while Rwanda was granted land in Egypt for similar purposes.

The partnership covers a wide range of fields, such as technical cooperation, industrial development, agriculture, education, youth empowerment, health, and military collaboration.

In 2017, President El-Sisi paid a state visit to Rwanda to further strengthen ties. Both countries are also members of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), a regional bloc that promotes free trade among member states.

Egypt has maintained an embassy in Kigali since 1976, while Rwanda reopened its embassy in Cairo in March 2015, highlighting the enduring nature of their diplomatic relationship.
