The body of a 23-year-old man from Rwamagana District, who had been on the run and was wanted by security authorities for allegedly stabbing and killing his 18-year-old girlfriend, was discovered in Lake Muhazi.
Security officials in Rwamagana launched a search for the suspect on the morning of Friday, October 17, 2025, after he was believed to have murdered the young woman with whom he had spent the previous night.
On Sunday morning, October 19, residents of Kimara Village in Nyarubuye Cell, Munyiginya Sector, found the man’s body floating in Lake Muhazi while fishing and immediately alerted local authorities.
The Executive Secretary of Munyiginya Sector, Brigitte Ruhangaza, confirmed the discovery, noting that the body had been retrieved and would be taken to the hospital for a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. “The young man was found dead in the waters of Lake Muhazi, and initial observations suggest he may have taken his own life,” Ruhangaza said. “However, a medical examination will confirm whether it was indeed a suicide or if foul play was involved.”
The deceased, identified as Bizumuremyi Faustin, 23, was a shopkeeper in Babasha Village. According to residents, he had been in a long-term romantic relationship with the victim, and many expressed shock upon learning that he had allegedly stabbed her to death before fleeing.
Local authorities have since urged parents to take greater responsibility for their children’s whereabouts and to ensure they know where they spend the night. Officials noted that the parents of the young woman were unaware that their daughter had spent the night with the suspect until they were informed of her tragic death.
