Cape Verde, one of the teams that will compete for a ticket to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN 2027) in the same group as Rwanda, continued to attract attention after a good result at the World Cup when they drew with Spain.
The Atlantic island nation was placed in Group K with Rwanda, Mali and Liberia after the draw for the CAN 2027 qualifiers held in Cairo, Egypt on May 19, 2026.
The qualifiers will be attended by 48 teams divided into 12 groups, each group consisting of four teams. The top two teams in each group will qualify for the 2027 AFCON.
The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will be held in three East African countries: Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda, marking the first time that such a tournament will be hosted by three countries.
For the Rwandan national team, the Amavubi, the journey to qualify will not be easy as they will face Mali, which has a strong history in African football, Cape Verde, which continues to perform well, and Liberia, which could surprise many teams.
Cape Verde’s performance against Spain has further demonstrated that they can compete with the world’s top teams, leading many to expect Group K to be one of the most competitive groups in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
While Cape Verde and Mali are considered the favourites to qualify, Rwanda also has a chance to compete for one of the two places that will allow them to advance to the next round, provided they continue to perform well and achieve good results in the qualifiers.
Only the top two teams in each group will qualify for AFCON 2027.
