Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has voiced his support for U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to increase tariffs on Indian imports to 25% due to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil.
Speaking in an interview with ABC News, Zelensky was asked about the sanctions imposed on India for maintaining energy trade ties with Russia. He responded by saying such measures were necessary as they put significant pressure on Moscow amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
“I believe it is a good idea to impose higher tariffs on countries that continue cooperation with Russia,” Zelensky stated.
On July 30, 2025, President Trump announced the tariff hike on Indian goods, citing India’s persistent energy cooperation with Russia as the reason behind the move.
However, Zelensky’s comments come just days after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi revealed that ahead of attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit—which focuses on politics, economics, and security—he held a phone conversation with Zelensky, assuring him of India’s support for restoring peace in Ukraine.
