Nyamasheke: 62-year-old man arrested over alleged sexual assault of 12-year-old girl as authorities urge vigilance

Authorities in Nyamasheke District have apprehended a 62-year-old man suspected of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl, a case that has triggered shock and concern among local residents.

The incident occurred on 24 October 2025 in Boreza Village, Gitwa Cell, Gihombo Sector. According to preliminary information, the suspect allegedly ambushed the minor as she returned home from fetching water, luring her with small gifts he is believed to have used in previous attempts to manipulate children.

Residents who noticed unusual behaviour raised alarm and confronted the man, who attempted to flee. He was later tracked down and arrested around 5 pm the same day.

Gihombo Sector Executive Secretary, Jérôme Niyitegeka, confirmed the arrest and stated that the suspect is currently detained at the RIB station in Gihombo as investigations continue. “We urge residents to remain vigilant and protect our children because such acts can severely affect their wellbeing and future,”
said Niyitegeka.

Strong legal protections for minors

Rwandan law considers the defilement of anyone under the age of 18 a serious criminal offense. Perpetrators convicted by a court of law face a minimum of 25 years in prison, and potentially a life sentence, especially in cases involving coercion, physical harm or transmission of lifelong illnesses.

These legal provisions aim to safeguard children and deter sexual violence, which continues to be reported in various regions of the country.

Community response and prevention

Local residents have called for continuous community awareness efforts and timely reporting of suspicious individuals to prevent recurring child abuse cases. They expressed concern that children often run errands alone, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation.

Support for the survivor

Child protection services emphasize the need for immediate psychosocial and medical assistance for survivors to mitigate emotional trauma and long-term consequences.

As investigations proceed, authorities say they are committed to ensuring that justice is served while the privacy and dignity of the minor are fully protected in accordance with national laws.
