Police arrest 29 suspects in Kimironko Market robbery

The Rwanda National Police have arrested 29 people suspected of robbery at Kimironko Market, located in Gasabo District, Kigali City.

They were arrested on August 19 and 20, 2025, after residents went shopping at Kimironko Market and reported that thieves were robbing them of their belongings.

As soon as the RNP learned of the information, in collaboration with other security agencies and residents, it carried out operations to arrest the suspects, arresting 29 in two days.

Those arrested are suspected of robbing market vendors, others of robbing customers who were shopping, where they were carrying luggage of them  and then they take it away.

It is believed that others were robbing people working in the vicinity of Kimironko Market.

Kigali City Police Spokesperson, CIP Gahonzire Wellars, said that the arrested individuals have been detained at Kimironko Police Station for further investigation.

He said that the Police appreciates the residents who raised the issue and those who were involved in the arrest of these individuals, and reminds residents to continue reporting any incidents of theft or other acts of vandalism.

He said, “The Police also warns all individuals who engage in theft, especially those who go to crowded places, such as markets or public transportation, with the intention of robbing those who work there or those who walk there. They are asking them to stop because it will not work out. Security agencies are vigilant and ready to arrest and punish them.”

CIP Gahonzire also advised residents to avoid giving their luggage to anyone they see because some of them are thieves who are hired as clerks.

He assured those who shop or work at various markets and stalls in Kigali City and elsewhere in the country that their safety and that of their belongings are protected. He said, “What they are asked to do is to avoid giving thieves a chance, and to report the thieves when they are caught.”
