The spokesperson of the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB), Dr. Murangira B. Thierry, said that the agency is beginning to see the results of its ongoing campaign to combat crimes involving celebrities and social media users.
Dr. Murangira made these remarks while attending the MTN Iwacu Music Festival concert held in Rubavu District on August 16, 2025.
During the event, the Rwanda Investigation Bureau continued its campaign against technology-related crimes, particularly those carried out through mobile phones.
When asked about the progress of the campaign targeting crimes among celebrities and social media users, Dr. Murangira explained that it had begun to yield positive results.
He said:
“The campaign has worked. Around this time last year, someone was arrested for misusing social media. But this year, there have been no such cases. It shows that people are beginning to understand. Rwandans now recognize what we expect from them, and they are taking it seriously. So let’s keep moving forward.”
Dr. Murangira also reminded social media users to engage with the platforms productively. He warned that using social media to commit crimes would only attract the attention of RIB.
He said:
“Social media was created to be used responsibly, not as a platform for committing crimes or targeting others. If you use it to attack people, we will not remain silent — we will come to you. Misusing social media is like sending an invitation to RIB, and if you invite us, we will respond, even though that is not our intention.”
